Internet may be a Commodity but Not all Internet is Equal

Updated: May 10, 2022

There is a reason why broadband Internet (i.e. DSL, Coax) is hundreds of dollars less than Dedicated Internet (i.e. Dedicated Fiber). The old adage "you get what you pay for" stands true. Broadband services are typically "shared" services. This means that the signal and bandwidth is shared between your business and other businesses and residents in the area. This leads to very unreliable service. Typically broadband internet does not include any service level agreements (SLAs) meaning that the service is "best effort" and the provider will not guarantee any level of service regarding speeds, packet loss, delay, or latency. Having no SLA is not big deal but having unreliable service is. If the provider gives you a prorated amount for having no internet service for a few days on a service that cost $150 a month, that will be practically nothing compared to the amount of revenue and business you lost. That is why reliable service is so important. Yes, an SLA is nice but you would rather have nearly 100% internet service because the loss of business and revenue would be much higher than any SLA credit from the provider. Dedicated Internet on Fiber is one way to get very reliable internet service. Another option is having multiple broadband circuits from multiple carriers providing internet service. This is common in the new WAN technology called SDWAN. If you are considering multiple providers, consider getting one from a telco (i.e. ATT, Verizon, Centurylink, etc) and a 2nd one from a cable operators (i.e. Comcast, Spectrum, etc) and, if necessary, a 3rd internet feed using Cellular data.
